A Rapid Palatal Expander RPE is also called a Rapid Maxillary Expander RME. It is used to widen the upper arch by parting the suture in the midline. It works very fast, usually in 2-3 weeks and it is important that Dr Gibilaro sees the patient every week until the desired expansion is reached.

Once the desired expanion is reached it is left in place for a few months.

A large gap will appear between the front teeth once the suture divides. The gap will start to close spontaneously and can be completely closed with fixed appliances later on in treatment.
